Taken from her forthcoming Spacebomb Records Debut ‘Out Of My Province‘, Nadia Reid has shared her second single “Get The Devil Out”, the accompanying video for which was directed by Martin Sagadin.
“Get The Devil Out” is a gospel-like reflection on internal demons that’s less an exorcism than a benediction. “I’m making friends with who I used to be / she’s a little shorter, a little lighter,” sings Nadia, buoyed by delicate strings and her spare fingerpicking as she comes to terms with human fragility.
Produced by Trey Pollard (Foxygen) and Matthew E. White (Natalie Prass, The Mountain Goats), the album finds Nadia embracing her new globe-trotting existence following the success of 2017’s Preservation. While the album features Nadia’s lushest arrangements to-date, at the centre of it all is her immaculate, immense voice and a perspective that’s at once inquisitive and empathetic. “As an artist, progression is key. I want to always be changing, pushing boundaries, to feel growth. It’s good for us,” Reid says.
The new album takes its title from an interview with one of Nadia’s favourite New Zealand authors, the late Janet Frame, in which the interviewer asks if she has considered the supposition that she is one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, to which Frame uncomfortably replies, “That question doesn’t reach me. It’s out of my province.” Explains Nadia, “I was so moved by her response for some reason. I am enamoured by her books. I can re-read them at any time and take such comfort from them. So ever since… out of my province. That phrase has never left me.”
