As recently announced on Folk Radio, Salt House are releasing their new album Huam on 20 March 2020 via Hudson Records. ‘Huam’, (scots for the call of an owl) is their third collection of songs and the second pairing with producer Andy Bell.
Songs are central to Salt House, whether they be new songs that sound as if they’ve always been here, ancient ballads woken up or poems given the tunes they’ve long deserved. In the case of their first single and album opener ‘Fire Light’ it is the latter – an adaptation of Nan Shepherd’s poem ‘Fires’. Shepherd most famous for The Living Mountain which was based on her experiences of hillwalking in the Cairngorms, one you should seek out if your new to Shepherd.
Recorded in Ardfern on the West coast of Scotland in the summer of 2019 with producer Andy Bell. It’s a beautiful opener and leaves me in no doubt that this is going to be a magical and passionate album.
