Anyone who perused our End of Year lists will have possibly noted that Bird in the Belly turned up in our Top 100 Albums of the Year as well as David Kidman’s Top 10 Albums of the Year. The album under the spotlight was Neighbours and Sisters which David described as “A work of strange beauty and startling innovation from an inspired teaming of four empathic talents.” Likewise, in his review of the album, Thomas Blake concluded:
Neighbours And Sisters is the work of a talented and varied quartet expanding their range. They can be cosmopolitan in one breath, ethereal in the next. Their songs can be sad and yearning or darkly humorous. Their arrangements can sound, almost at once, ancient and startlingly contemporary. The rapid evolution of Bird In The Belly into one of our finest folk acts is a joy to behold.
In that same review, he touched on the track ‘All You Females’ stating “The group’s political side is in evidence on All You Females, a tale of workplace sexual misconduct that dates back to the nineteenth century but feels frighteningly modern all the same.”
Here they are performing it live at the Ropetackle during their album launch in November last year… It’s also our Song of the Day.
The video above should be ample evidence that they are as exceptional live as they are on record…all the more reason to go and see them on one of their upcoming tour dates kicking off with London’s Green Note on February 2nd.
