Featuring Toby Shaer on Irish Whistle and contributing backing vocals and violin by Stu Hanna, ‘Light Up London Town’ is a gentle-handed yet poignant overview of the ill-fated gunpowder plot of 1605 – and of the political and religious climate of the time.
Depicted as villains within our present historical understanding; there was also an element of desperation behind the men’s actions. Odette says of the song: “I’ve been asked by people whether I was deliberately making reference to our country’s current political unrest, given the echoes of dissatisfaction felt both then and now, for albeit different reasons – but I’m merely the storyteller, and it is truly a great story.”
