Back in April this year our Artist of the Month was Anglo-Americana London duo Copper Viper featuring Robin Joel Sangster and Duncan Menzies. That same month they released their debut album Cut it Down, Count the Rings. In his review, Glenn Kimpton commented on how the album didn’t sound like a debut, so confident and cohesive were the songs it came as a surprise to learn it was their first. He took the opportunity to explore this further in a follow-up interview which you can read here.
2019 has been a busy year for the duo since the release of their debut album “Cut It Down, Count The Rings” with a sold-out show at the widely renowned Green Note in April. In addition to touring extensively in Europe, Canada and the UK, and a packed summer festival season (including Cambridge Folk Festival, where they were nominated for the Christian Raphael Prize for new artists), writing for the second record is well underway.
The first taste of what to expect (outside of the group’s live shows, where several new songs have already become staples of the set) comes in the form of a live video recording of Opal & The Bear, a subtle yet forceful ballad which combines Copper Viper’s characteristic vocal harmonies and thought-provoking lyrical content with an expanded harmonic and instrumental palette, creating a stylistic blend that is at once familiar and unique.
Copper Viper will be performing as part of the London Remixed Festival at Rich Mix, Shoreditch on Saturday 1st February 2020, and will be returning to London’s Green Note together with English fingerstyle guitarist Karl Culley on Friday 28th February, presented by Roundtable Collective (tickets £12 adv., £15 on the door). It will be a great gig so be sure to book early – https://www.greennote.co.uk/production/copper-viper-karl-culley/
