Although not yet into the full-festive mode, this week’s Folk Show does features a couple of festive tunes. They include a track from Kate Rusby‘s new album Holly Head which is out now on Pure Records and a tune from Awake Arise: A Winter Album by Lady Maisery and Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith.
We also have a track from Night Songs, the new album from Franc Cinelli who is our Artist of the Month for December, you can read our album review here. Also featured this month is Small Town Stories, the new album from Smith and McClennan which we reviewed here.
Everything else featured is either a new (released in the last month or so) or forthcoming releases so it’s chock-full of new discoveries including Dàibhidh Stiùbhard who was senior traditional singing champion at both the Tyrone and Ulster Fleadh in 2018. He is part of a new generation of singers who take their cues from legends of the Ulster tradition such as Paddy Tunney, Sarah Makem, and Rita Gallagher. He returns to Glasgow and Celtic Connections pn 22 January to launch his debut album An Sionnach Dubh. As you can hear, he has a great voice and he does a great rendition of The Overgate.
Calling to mind Nina Simone, there is no mistaking the tender, powerful, velveteen vocals of Lady Nade who has a new single out on December 20th with Heart of Mine (acoustic) which is a pinful tribute and heartfelt love letter to a grandfather suffering from Alzheimer’s.
One last mention for a duo which has had a lot of exposure on Folk Radio UK this week – Varo are Dublin-based duo Consuelo Nerea Breschi from Italy and Lucie Azconaga from France (watch the video for Sovay here).
