In March last year, I shared the news of a new crowdfunding campaign by whisky expert Dave Broom to raise a substantial part of the cost of filming a road trip documentary, exploring that untold story of whisky and Scottish culture. The film. titled ‘The Amber Light’, aimed to highlight the lesser-known parts of Scottish culture and history through the lens of whisky, with personalities from art, music, literature and food.
At the time, Adam Park, producer-director, said: “This is a hugely exciting project with the world’s foremost expert on whisky. We realised there’s a much greater and weirder story to tell about whisky and the culture that’s built up over the centuries. Music and storytelling will be key components.”
The good news is that the film is now complete and ‘The Amber Light’ will be in cinemas on 22nd Nov (details below). Among the artists that were involved in the film were The Furrow Collective (Lucy Farrell, Rachel Newton, Emily Portman, and Alasdair Roberts) who fitted the underlying ideas of the film perfectly in the way in which they have interpreted traditional music in a modern setting, respecting the roots of the songs but placing them in a contemporary context. They also have a tendency to pick songs about death, murder, and possession, so they seemed the perfect bunch to be our musical guide to the dark side of Scotch. Filmed by Adam Park in support of the film, here they are performing False True Love which features on third album ‘Fathoms’ (reviewed here).
