The description behind how Sean Aston MacTaggart’s forthcoming EP ‘Love You Always’ came into being reads “A fair-weather love—someone who’s come and gone through the years. For Sean Aston MacTaggart, that person returned to his life four years ago, time began again, and a record was born.”
The EP features a collection of six acoustic tracks which MacTaggart cut to a tape machine in his parents’ empty suburban home. He spent his nights recording from midnight till dawn in the stillness, a process that’s translated intimately—MacTaggart’s voice is gentle, and disarming at times.
It’s to those teenage years he turns to on ‘Every Little Brunette’. That stillness described above is so palpable here that you feel you are almost intruding. That delicate moment is so well conveyed through his voice and guitar, there’s both intensity and fragility in what is clearly a lovingly and finely crafted song.
Sean shared the following:
“I’ve been writing this song since I was seventeen. It’s a long time ago love that’s lasted years. It’s about two dear friends who know something about the world that no one else does, and what goes unsaid between them. Every Little Brunette has been recorded dozens of times over the years. Like the other songs on Love You Always, it was most honestly expressed as a one take. I set up two mics and my tape machine in the most intimate room of the house and played. The take I chose to put on the record is raw. It has my voice failing and buzzy strings but I sang it like reading a letter.”
