This Friday sees the release of The Möbius Kiss, the debut album from Catherine Ruddie and also one of our Featured Albums of the Month. In his review of the album, Thomas Blake described listening to it as a “deliciously unnerving experience.” He went on to conclude “Catherine Rudie’s ability to create vivid moods from often sparse ingredients is a rare gift – she can make you feel as if you inhabit the dream-spaces of these songs, and then return you to the real world with a bump. Often, it is necessary to stop and remind yourself that this is a debut album, such is the quality of these songs and the command that Rudie has over them. She has combined the traditional and the contemporary in a way that feels entirely fresh, and more importantly, she has reminded us that creativity is a constant in a world defined by its fluctuations and vacillations.”
One of the songs which had an “uncanny feel” was Pale Blue Dot for which we have the pleasure of sharing the accompanying video. Catherine provided a personal insight into both the making of the video and the inspiration behind it.
“Pale Blue Dot was filmed mostly on the Bakerloo Line platform at Baker Street and on the DLR around Canary Wharf and Greenwich. I walked about as if I was another commuter, but with the added strangeness of a gold pyramid on my head. The filming was done by my friend – the brilliant filmmaker and musician Jonni Slater – who often wasn’t very obvious to those around me, so people were quite open about staring and being curious. I had several interactions with security guards, especially at Canary Wharf but everyone was very respectful, even a little nervous at times.”
“The video was inspired by a man I saw a couple of years ago at Kings Cross station who looked like a completely normal commuter, with a suit and tie… except he was also wearing a gold pyramid on his head. I did some research about him – you can look him up – “man with gold pyramid on his head in London” and you can find out all about him. To me, he represents an independence of thought and creativity which is very admirable in a world which can often seem very mundane and lacking in magic.
“To me, this seems to fit with the theme of the song itself. Although we can become too used to our routines and our ‘normal’ lives… really we are on a tiny planet surrounded by an infinity of weird and wonderful things. Our existence itself is as strange and magical as anything we can dream up in our heads.”
The Möbius Kiss will be released on 8th November 2019, distributed by Hudson Records
