We last featured Yvonne McDonnell on the pages of Folk Radio back in 2016 when we premiered I’m Not This Layer Of Skin taken from her EP Not Her Own, an EP that focused on empowerment and having the ability to positively stand up to life’s daily struggles.
Her new single It’s Not That Cold Anymore tackles loneliness, an equally strong challenge that many people face, especially around this time of year when the focus is very much on joy and celebration. The simple guitar melody allows her voice to really shine on this track which carries such emotional weight. She pours her heart into the song which is complimented by equally moving violin section and for the four and a half minutes that follow, she suspends time.
She tells us:
“The song was inspired by old black and white photography, and the nostalgia some of the images evoke. I wrote it at Christmas, a time that can be incredibly lonely for some people. It’s about wanting to be with people you love, who are no longer in your life and how Christmas can bring back feelings for them when you most want them to be around you. It didn’t take me long to write, I was more focused on capturing the emotion in the music and the production of the song, which resulted in the harmonies and melodic guitar. It was my first experience recording a song myself and it came out pretty similar to how I’d hoped it would. Maria Kroon’s stunning violin composition and my producer Kyle’s final mix really made it what it is.”
