Hailing from South London, ewe (previously known under the longer title of Edgar Wallace Exchange) draws on the Folk, Blues, Latin & their heritage North African music to form lyrical songs whose rhythmic and hypnotic colours have earned comparisons to Yo La Tengo, Devendra Banhart, Nick Drake and Milton Nascimento.
ewe tell us that their new song, titled rearranged, is a tune about sleeplessness and the horizon between conscious thought and the experience of meanderings of unconsciousness just before sleep kicks in. “We tried to convey this through both the song’s lyricism and drifting between solid rhythms and the chromatic runs or wild cello harmonics.” The single, released today, precedes their sophomore EP in February 2020. Niven’s reflective vocals slip through late-night jazzy meanderings and noirish guitar harmonics – an original and entrancing single. We’re looking forward to hearing more…
After releasing an acclaimed debut EP ‘Tick Tock’, produced by BBC Folk Award multi-nominee and winner, Ben Walker, ewe toured in the UK and later in Spain where he began to implement elements of flamenco guitar styles into his music.
2016 saw the release of Edgar Wallace Exchange, a project that received support from BBC 6 Music, Folk Radio UK and attracted the interest of Mice Parade’s Adam Pierce who arranged several dates across New York State, including a support show for British Sea Power splinter group Brakes. ewe returned from the USA to play a sellout show at St Pancras Old Church.
Having played Festival No. 6, Red Rooster, Wilderness, Tandem and shows with bands such as Brakes, Low Chimes, Francobollo, Oh Sister, Ben Walker & Josienne Clarke, Sophie Jamieson and Patch & The Giant, ewe will release their sophomore EP in February 2020.
