Earlier this month saw the release of ‘Little Common Twist’ by Charles Rumback and Ryley Walker which Glenn Kimpton reviewed here. Although they have released an album before, it marked their debut for Thrill Jockey and is one which is “broader in nature than Cannots, although the songs are for the most part shorter, and its approach is less self-conscious.”
Little Common Twist is a very skilfully played and arranged piece of work, which balances its many flavours like an accomplished chef. It’s brilliant and once the waves of reverberating electric guitar and the addictive drumbeat of album closer ‘Worn and Held’ fade into a low tidal drone, you will want to go back to the beginning and experience the whole thing again. Both are Chicago-based musicians where there is a thriving improvisational music scene which includes the likes of Katinka Kleijn (Chicago’s first lady of the cello) and Bill MacKay who recently released their album Stir on Drag City (reviewed here). MacKay and Walker are also frequent collaborators having released SpiderBeetleBee (2017) and Land of Plenty (2015). Like Walker, Rumback is a sought after musician (and composer), especially in the jazz world.
Thrill Jockey recently invited Rumback to have a delve through their extensive archive of music and talk about some favourites including Brokeback, Sam Prekop and Town & Country. Watch the video below:
