Rife with longing, the new single from Ardentjohn, I Wasn’t There, is a melancholy look at events missed and lives lived separately. Moments of difference and recognition of opportunities lost, merge with the heartbreaking reality of what will never be, while guitars ring out and yet Ardentjohn aren’t the kind of band that gives in to the heartbreak. Life can and does go on.
In the accompanying video (filmed by Simon Mark Taylor), band members are centre screen in a world that does not seem to notice their existence. From a farmer’s fields to the centre of a city, they stand while the world passes by. Yet the final shots of father and daughter suggest that despite it all this is still a world of glory and wonder.
I Wasn’t there is taken from Ardentjohn’s latest album Malin Head reviewed here.
Malin Head is a tribute to the sense of longing many of Irish descent must have felt leaving everything behind. Accordingly, there is hope amidst the heartbreak in equal measure. Ardentjohn mine both seams, creating a statement of yearning that tugs at listeners long after the album has ended.
