Our Song of the Day comes from Irish singer-songwriter Dylan Walshe. Many of you who are familiar with the London acoustic scene will remember Dylan who moved to Nashville back in 2016. “Ruined” is taken from his debut studio record ‘All Manner of Ways’ and this is the final song video from the album for which Lagomorphosis (aka Teresa Elizabeth Lobos) has created a remarkable animation.
Teresa’s work is very striking and often makes use of black and white images, she’s made videos for the likes of Stick in the Wheel which have featured previously on Folk Radio. She creates animations using paper, old photos, paint, ink, and various found objects. For the video “Ruined,” junk shops were scoured and several vintage photographs were purchased to be painted and drawn upon, ripped, and otherwise manipulated. Hundreds of scans of these manipulations were then strung together to create the animations in the video.
As for the song itself, summed up, Dylan tells us “..it’s pretty much a folk song about the depths & the experiences of a relationship or relationships. How a new way forward is always a possibility. How past experiences influence the future, but shouldn’t define the future either. Finding the light through the darkness.” Dylan has many strengths but there is no denying his lyrical skills with the song always being at the forefront of his music, as they are here.
Lyrics to ‘Ruined’ by Dylan Walshe
I’ve ruined
& been ruined
& thinkin’ is doin’
It does good & bad
‘Cause I’ve been dwellin’
On every thought you might’ve had
You know that less has turned a good man bad
I’ve said too much
& not enough
I’ve wondered if the words
Would sound better
In a letter
Written to be read by you
Aren’t you as cold as me
I said & reached for her
She tried to be clever
& just took my temperature
& said my love was a murderer
That my heart was a hollow grave
Begging to bury her
Now don’t be hard babe
‘Cause you’ve ruined
& you’ve been ruined
That’s not to say
It won’t go our way…
‘All Manner Of Ways’ features guests such as James Fearnley of The Pogues & Andy Gibson of Hank III. Released on Stirring Foot Records, the album was recorded in Nashville, where Dylan currently resides. Dylan recently joined the Uptown Artist Group agency roster & touring dates will be announced soon.
