In his review of their latest album Salika, Molika, Thomas Blake opened his review by referring back to Erlend Apneseth Trio‘s debut album of 2016 – Det Andre Rommet. He described their debut as the creation of “a new and exhilarating blueprint for Norwegian folk music and in doing so proved that a genre with ancient roots could be made entirely new.”
Released on the progressively forward-thinking Hubro Music label, the label shared a live performance of Magma (from their debut album) at Bergen Kjøtt in 2017. Just over 5 minutes in length on the album the trio perform an extended improvised set, a mesmerising spectacle and one we never tire of re-visiting. The trio are Erlend Apneseth on Hardanger-fiddle, Stephan Meidell on Guitar and electronics and Øyvind Hegg-Lunde on drums.
“One of my greatest sources of inspiration has been exploring my own instrument, finding new sounds, discords, really anything that can evoke a new mood or association.” Erlend Apneseth
Every step he takes on that journey, as proven on their latest release Salika, Molika, has been a joy to witness.
