Originally from their fourth studio album Birds of My Neighborhood released in 1999, The Innocence Mission have released a new recording of ‘The Lakes of Canada’ also our Song of the Day. Side by side the new recording is less stripped back but never overdone, instead, it heightens that achingly beautiful fragility that The Innocence Mission do so well.
Birds of my Neighbourhood was the first album the band performed as a trio following the departure of founding member Steve Brown in 1997. The photo of the band’s singer Karen Peris that was used for the cover was taken by her husband and fellow band member Don Peris a few months before the release of Birds of my Neighbourhood.
The track ‘Lakes of Canada’ has also been covered by Sufjan Stevens.
The single is available on streaming services and also as a ‘name your price’ download via Bandcamp.
The track also features in our Mellow Folk playlist on Spotify.
