Small Houses is the musical project of Flint, MI native Jeremy Quentin. He’s an artist that’s managed to fall off our radar since we reviewed his 2013 album Exactly Where You Wanted To Be. A glance back at our coverage reveals some intuitive comments from Thomas Blake who said of that album:
“Quentin’s brand of songwriting doesn’t perform any tricks. There is no musical sleight of hand. There are no gimmicks. Nothing explodes from the speakers like a bad advertisement pleading for an instantaneous and thoughtless response. The essence of these songs is their openness and it is this alone that demands attention – a kind of honesty that appears to assume a prearranged contract between artist and listener, a tacit agreement that you will see the album through to its conclusion. It’s an old-fashioned notion, I suppose, and a brave one in today’s climate of lazy gratification.” He concluded with the suggestion that it “leaves room for the intriguing thought that there might be a whole other side (or sides) to Small Houses.”
That may well have been the case as in the interim, at least two studio albums have slipped by, the last being ‘I Don’t Know What’s Safe’ released earlier this year.
Although his social media feed has been quiet for a while, he has just quietly slipped this video out on Youtube for new track “Since Always”, in the description for which he states it is “The first of a video series documenting the demoing process of a new album.” We look forward to hearing more.
As an aside, Alex, our analogue-loving Editor (also a sucker for a photograph) noted that Jeremy was also a keen 35mm film shooter – you can check out some of his shots on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/small_houses/
