The opening track from Sandra Kerr’s new album ‘Rebel With Her Chords’ is called “Girl Upon the Road’, a song which she tells us “celebrates the young Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg, who has single-handedly inspired the Schools Strikes 4 Climate. The song contains many of her thoughts about and responses to the Climate Emergency, including her affirmation that hope will only come through our deeds. I have used the structure of the medieval ballad ‘The False Knight Upon The Road’ and adapted an ancient Swedish ballad tune to carry it.”
You should not be seen or heard – said the man upon the road
Then do not take my word – said the girl as she stood.
You’d have us live in fear – said the man upon the road
If you hold our planet dear – said the girl as she stood.
Though our time is short, and the way is long
Our hope is in our deeds when our resolve is strong.
Back in March, Sandra shared a video for the song (solo version)…
You can hear a preview of the album version along with two other tracks below which feature a number of musical collaborators including daughter and son-in-law Nancy & James Fagan, good friends Will Pound, Tim Yates, Rosie Hood and Tom A. Wright.
In his review of the album, David Kidman described the album as a “self-portrait of a wryly self-confessed septuagenarian still in mighty fine canny fettle and eternally committed to the cause.”
