Lowender Peran Celtic Festival returns to the Hotel Bristol, Newquay on the 30th October – 3rd November 2019. Whilst the event has long-cherished and nurtured tradition in its celebration of Celtic song & dance and literature & language, Lowender Peran also plays an increasingly pivotal role in the exploration and creation of new forms of Celtic identity and expression.
That adventurous Celtic spirit is exemplified by Saturday night headliner Gwenno, whose intoxicating, electro-pop second album, Le Kov (the first UK top-twenty release recorded entirely in Cornish!) was described by The Guardian’s reviewer Michael Hann as: “an exploration of Cornish identity… that looks backwards and forwards simultaneously.” Gwenno is supported by trailblazing Breton language rapper and beatboxer Krismenn.
The preceding night’s concert features pioneering Welsh chamber-folk trio VRï, whose Ffoles Llantrisant is currently nominated in the ‘Best Traditional Track’ category of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Support comes from Cornish folk-jazz guitar virtuoso and songwriter Pete Berryman.
Sunday night’s audience can expect a breathtaking performance from Ali Levack (pipes &whistles), Pablo Lafuente (guitar) and Ewan Baird (bodhrán) – the multi-award-winning musicians who comprise Scotland’s fastest-rising trio Project Smok.
