The last time we mentioned Franc Cinelli on these pages was in 2015 upon the release of his album The Marvel Age. The great news is that Cinelli makes a long-awaited return in September with his new album Night Songs which was written throughout the last year and recorded once again in his SongCircle Studio in West London. It’s described as probably being his most soulful collection of material yet.
The accompanying press reveals that Cinelli is still well-travelled, something we touched on in his last album where we concluded in Cinelli’s case “it clearly is better to travel, but in doing so, he may just have arrived.” He most certainly did but he clearly has so much more to offer. Having begun 2018 in New York City, creating a series of straight-to-vinyl 7” singles through Leesta Vall Recordings in Brooklyn, Cinelli returned to London to commence work on a new set of songs, some of which would eventually fall together in the completion of Night Songs.
This new collection joins together a healthy dose of spiritual cleansing and demon conquering with the help of varied influences crossing both Eastern and Western folk music, from Blaze Foley and John Martyn to Dion DiMucci and Bobby Womack to N. Ravikiran and Ravi Shankar.
When Paul Woodgate reviewed The Marvel Age he described it as ‘rumbling out of the groove like a battered freight train, each boxcar a different story, every station strange, and strangely familiar.’ The ‘strange’ lives on in his new lead single ‘Stay Strange’ for which he has released a video below. “May your ideas take you places…” they have done for Cinelli…
