Earlier this year, Brooklyn-based folk singer Katie Schottland, better known as Swimming Bell, the moniker she performs under, released her stunning debut album Wild Sight which showcased her ‘hypnotic vocals’ alongside her strikingly expressive lyrics.
While working on the album with Oli Deakin (Lowpines) as collaborator and producer, she had the chance to see Wand perform at The Brudenell Club and was inspired. “I thought it would be fun to put my own spin on one of my favourite songs called ‘Driving’. It’s the last song on their 2017 album, ’Plum’. Our version was built around two notes on the piano. Oli had started playing the chords to the song, and had for a moment, alternated back and forth between just two of the keys. I thought it sounded really suspenseful and lovely, so we built it up from there.”
The original track is a stunning guitar-led finale to Wand’s ‘Plum’ album. No small challenge then, but here the simple piano pattern and ambient opening prime the canvas in readiness for Schottland’s empathetic and beautiful vocals. It’s a stunning cover that even Cory Hanson of Wand who wrote the song would be proud of.
Wild Sight is out now on Adventure Club Records.
