English songwriter Jo Beth Young has previously featured on Folk Radio UK under the name Talitha Rise. Now shortened to RISE, she returns with ‘Radio Silence’, the second single from upcoming album Strangers.
Radio Silence opens eerily as an old radio signal leads us to a brutal opening line; “I waited for a saviour but no one came”. It is a bitter/sweet and raw account of being cut out or ghosted by a friend or lover and is inspired, Rise says, by some gut-wrenching references, such as a woman whose parachute is cut by her husband, a biblical scapegoat and the dark fate of the lifeboat keepers of Small’s Lighthouse.
She tells us “I wrote and recorded Radio Silence at a friends house in Ireland whilst leaving a very arduous long term situation, so it has a rawness that I think can only come in the actual moment of experiencing and feeling something full volume. I’d seen a documentary at the time on a woman whose husband had cut both her parachutes in order to end her life. He was found guilty and imprisoned but she still wouldn’t believe it and I think that was something I understood could potentially happen. That we can love or think so well of someone that we can’t believe the really obvious lack of care played out in front us.I was really lucky to work with my live band on this album and Peter Yates (Fields Of The Nephilim) brought these lovely complimentary riffs in over the main guitar and just took it up to another level.”
The music video by filmmaker Alex T follows RISE through the moon-like landscape of The Burren in Ireland as she travels to a final burial destination and, like the song itself, is scattered with bitter references in an otherwise beautiful landscape. The track features the signature guitars of Peter Yates (Fields of the Nephilim) who plays on the album alongside her own live band. The song is the second glimpse into the follow up to her acclaimed debut An Abandoned Orchid House. Strangers is due for release in October 2019.
