Since the release of Magic Ship last year, the Mountain Man camp has been a hive of activity as Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and now Molly Sarlé step out from the shadows on solo offerings. The one remaining member Amelia Meath followed her own path with Nick Sanborn a few years prior with Sylvan Esso whose 2014 self-titled debut made a big splash leading to their network television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and extensive airplay across the US.
Rewind back to June – Alexandra, under the name ‘Daughter of Swords’ released Dawnbreaker which Bob Fish reviewed for Folk Radio:
The journey taken to create Daughter of Swords’ Dawnbreaker dazzles in its simplicity. And it surprises in the ability to put a positive spin onto some of life’s heartbreaking moments.
On 20 September, Molly Sarlé releases here debut album Karaoke Angel, an album described as perfect for late-night karaoke comedowns, plaintive morning walks and conjuring the spirit world. West Coast incantations with a warm, Appalachian glow. Her bio adds:
…a collection of songs by a woman who was born understanding that her ability to feel – deeply and without shame – is her greatest strength. It is the result of a free and open-hearted devotion to the search for passion, and the complete, unwavering depiction of truth.
Be sure to catch one of her tour dates kicking off this month in the UK (details below). In the meantime, check out her latest video (directed by Megan Lovallo and Kitty Disco) for her third album single Twisted on which she shared:
Twisted is a song I wrote to myself. I wrote it while working on a David Mamet play called ‘Oleanna.’ The play is written so well that it’s impossible to tell who is right, and who is wrong – so empathy ensues. That’s what “Twisted” is about. If you are paying attention to your life, and to the lives of other people, it’s impossible to escape empathy…Enjoy!
