Earlier this year, Hollie Fullbrook and her band, best known as Tiny Ruins released Olympic Girl which The Wire hailed as her most powerful album to date. Fullbrook is now planning an acoustic version of the album titled Olympic Girls Solo on 27th September via Ba Da Bing Records. The album calls to mind her earlier releases including her 2011 debut “Some Were Meant For The Sea” which we reviewed here.
“..she may appear NZ’s answer to Laura Marling, her vocals wise and rich beyond their years, while the clarity of her stripped-back folk songs belie the depth in the words uttered and curious stories told.” Melanie McGovern, Folk Radio UK
The album drops ahead of her first US tour dates since releasing Olympic Girls with Aldous Harding and a solo Autumn tour of the UK and Europe (see details below).
Listen to the title track and lead single below:
The album features some of Fullbrook’s most accomplished songwriting, recorded onto tape in whole live takes at Auckland’s Roundhead Studios. The label state the solo album is intended as a companion piece rather than an alternative version – “this solo release offers a special treat for the legions of Tiny Ruins fans who appreciate songcraft in its barest form.”
