Late last night while trawling around the net playing obscure releases to get me through a sleepless night, I snapped up a rare 7″ single from Mike & Cara Gangloff (Black Twig Pickers, Pelt, The Great American Drone Orchestra) released in 2015 by The Great Pop Supplement (on cherry red vinyl – yum). Those of you drawn toward the gods of drone will enjoy this – it will vibrate your very core.
Don’t be misled by the tune Rake & Rambling Boy, our Song of the Day, as this duo has a radical streak running through them…it’s not all calm waters, there’s chaos and disorder in abundance as well.
Kentucky-born Mike, who plays fiddle and banjo is a “longtime sonic voyager” having formed drone group Pelt in 1993 in which, after his first line-up quit, was joined by Patrick Best and the late guitar legend Jack Rose. He also plays in the Black Twig Pickers and has collaborated with the likes of Steve Gunn, Nathan Bowles and many others.
Cara’s bio describes her as a “singer of jazz and more, restless explorer of instrumental possibilities” there’s no denying that these two clearly bounce off each other and after hearing this track I was lost watching them in session for nearly an hour on Youtube. You’ll be hearing more.
Although the single is sold-out, you can buy this, along with some other great releases including collaborations with the likes of Steve Gunn (Melodies for a Savage Fix) on Bandcamp here: https://mikecaragangloff.bandcamp.com
