The Lasses are, Sophie Janna and Margot Merah, a folk duo from The Netherlands who are due to tour the UK in early September. While The Lasses, who have been performing in folk clubs and on festival stages since 2012, may be relatively unknown in the wider folk world, this may soon change.
Following their UK tour, they will be launching their new album ‘Undone’. Taken from the album, we have the pleasure of sharing their new single ‘The Tide’ which is also our Song of the Day.
‘The Tide’, is a song by London songwriter Jack Durtnall. Margot and Sophie beat him to record it because he sent a phone recording of the song while they were in the studio working on ‘Undone’. They loved the song so much that they wanted it to include it on the album and Jack good-naturedly agreed. Morris Kliphuis added a wonderful arrangement on French horn to the song.
Their harmonies are exceptional, and along with the simple guitar accompaniment and plaintive French Horn, ‘The Tide’ is both striking and unforgettable. The single is sure to help build their presence ahead of the album release – and deservedly so.
The album features thirteen songs about losing one’s composure and trying to regain it and revolves around Sophie and Margot’s strong harmonies. It was recorded primarily with just one microphone by producer Janos Koolen.
The full album will be released on October 18, 2019, in Amsterdam. Tour dates for The Lasses can be found on www.thelasses.nl/shows.
They will be in the UK in early September: 6-7 September at Leadhills Music Blast in Scotland, 8 September at The Musician in Leicester, 9 September at The Slaughtered Lamb in London, 11 September at Upcycled Sounds + Fusion Arts Studio in Oxford.
