On 11th October 2019, Richard Dawson is set to return with his sixth solo album 2020. His last album Peasant, released in 2017, must surely have been his most successful to date, managing to reach many ‘end of year’ best album lists including No. 10 in the Guardian as well as Thomas Blake’s Top 10 here on Folk Radio,
Quite simply, there has been nothing quite like Peasant. This year or ever. A complete sound-world – gentle, earthy, epic, subtle – created with little more than Dawson’s singular voice and expressive guitar playing. The album’s strands weave together to create something akin to a modernist historical novel, or a tapestry created to tell the story of a not-quite-earthly village. An astonishingly realised work of art. Thomas Blake
While we’ve yet to sample the full offer of 2020, Dawson’s ability to introduces us to grand themes through small lives is sure to strike a chord. Domino Records are already calling it his “hardest-hitting and unflinchingly honest album to date” and “his poetic masterwork.”
The more you read this, the more relevant it sounds: “The record is an utterly contemporary state-of-the-nation study that uncovers a tumultuous and bleak time. Here is an island country in a state of flux; a society on the edge of mental meltdown.”
Domino are now taking pre-orders on the double heavyweight white vinyl version of 2020 with an exclusive comic book. Mine’s ordered!
On Fri 20th September Richard curates ‘Myth and Movement’ featuring Mary Hampton, Yama Warashi, Afework Negussie, Pentecostal Party and himself performing with Nev Clay. Read our recent post here and get your tickets here.
