‘Great Old Northern Line’ is the second single from British folk singer-songwriter newcomer Odette Michell, taken from her newly released and critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Wildest Rose’. The album was released back in April and make quite an impression:
Breathing fresh life into the acoustic tradition while staying true to its heritage, Michell is one of the brightest new names to have emerged full-grown on the country’s folk scene in recent years. Mike Davies (Folk Radio UK Review)
Featuring a driving percussion and bass resembling the sound of a train shuffling slowly along it’s track, and a lilting uplifting chorus, Odette sketches out tales of urban loneliness across a backdrop of lush harmonies and intelligent lyrics – ‘The Great Old Northern Line’ sets a scene that so many of us can relate to, yet is imbued with a feeling of comfort in amongst the everyday.
Accompanying the release of the single is a stunning music video filmed in black and white with a vintage/urban twist.
Of equal weight is the b-side; the almost hymnal ‘Rolling Shores of England’ featuring folk music legend Phil Beer (half of multi-award-winning acoustic folk band Show of Hands) who lends his trademark vocals in sensitive accompaniment to Odette’s in each of the choruses. Both tracks, taken from the album, are capably produced by Stu Hanna of Megson and the single is released July 22nd 2019.
