Our Song of the Day comes from Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Adir L.C. with Best Version (of My Short Life), the opening track and final single from his second full-length album “Basket Star” – out on Birdwatcher Records.
The accompanying video, which you can watch below, features super 8 film footage shot by his grandfather which he talks about below. The footage blends effortlessly with the jazzy brass and shimmering free-flowing percussion, dreamy views of distant memories play-out alongside Adir L.C’s prose-like and beautifully constructed lyrics that remain with you long after the final note fades out:
Every time you laugh, I can’t help but crack… even after all these years
sweeping dirty leaves, spring cleaning – its the holiest time of the year
Into the calm wave headspace, that unparalleled strength in your spine
Richard Law, who made the video, has also directed videos for Real Estate (“Had to Hear”) and Julian Lynch. Adir L.C. shared the following on the song and video:
“Best Version (of My Short Life)” is the one love song on ‘Basket Star’ – though it never really talks about love directly, it was written for my partner about my consistent amazement of her strength and power. After the passing of my grandmother last summer, I came across a collection of old super 8 footage my grandfather had shot over a twenty year period. Collaborating with old high school friend Richard Law who also utilizes a super 8 camera in his work, we decided to create something that could speak to the timelessness of all kinds of love and it’s power to shape the short amount of time we have together.
I highly recommend that you go and seek this one out. Order Basket Star over on Bandcamp here: https://adirlc.bandcamp.com/album/basket-star-2
