He’s a musician, ethnomusicologist, and professor with influences ranging from Sacred Harp singing to The Ramones. He’s considered one of the best singers in American roots music and luckily for those of us in the UK, he makes regular trips to these shores where we’re treated to old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance tunes from New England and Southern Appalachia.
Tim Eriksen kicks off his UK tour tonight at the brilliant Bodmin Folk Club before taking in venues across the UK including the brilliant Sidmouth Folk Festival where I last saw him in 2013. His dates include gigs with Mama’s Broke, Susan Brearey (Pumpkintown- Songs, Stories, and a Magic Lantern) and Folk Radio UK favourites Cath and Phil Tyler. See the dates below.
Here he is performing Mountains of Pomeroy, a song that has travelled from Ireland and no doubt adapted as it’s been passed down from one generation to the next. The lyrics were originally written by the Irish physician, scientist, writer, politician and poet, Dr George Sigerson and were published in 1869 (The Harp of Erin: A Book of Ballad-Poetry and of Native Song). The same fella who wrote the paper “Cannabiculture in Ireland; its profit and possibility” in 1866 which looked at the growing of cannabis in Ireland to transform the economy. You live and learn…
