Ever since Ryan Young released his debut solo album which Neil McFadyen reviewed for Folk Radio back in 2017 (read it here), I’ve been watching many videos of him performing across the country in sessions with a wide array of musicians including the likes of Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill.
Whoever he is performing with, he’s a real joy to watch. As Neil said in his review: “It’s tempting to say that we can expect great things from Ryan Young in the future. His quiet success to date and open, exploratory style is evidence of an impressive, budding talent. That future has already begun to open up, though. Ryan Young’s debut is a remarkable and fascinating album that no fan of traditional fiddle should miss.”
One combination I love to hear is fiddle and guitar, a combo he frequently appears in with the likes of Jenn Butterworth and here with Scottish guitar player Chris Amer at the Sutherland Sessions performing ‘Up Da Stroods’ and ‘Little Donald In The Pigpen’.
Ryan seems to be constantly touring so there is no shortage of opportunities to catch him performing over the coming months including Cecil Sharp House, Priddy Folk Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival and many more. Details here: http://www.ryanyoung.scot/gigs.html
