Our Song of the Day comes from Broken Forest, the inventive work of writer, singer and producer Luise London. Since she was a young child, Luise has had a great passion for nature and its connection to our lives and minds. These and other heartfelt messages are delicately translated into Broken Forest’s music, with sweet vocals hanging over a mesmerising blend of atmospheric indie-folk and organic electronica, where the sometimes harsh and coldness of modern urban life meets the sensibility and beauty of nature.
“Ghosts in the Dark” is her new single (out on24th of May), she shared the following on the song and accompanying video which you can watch below:
“I love to use nature sounds as part of the arrangement in my music. I see them as an instrument in itself. The same is the case for Ghosts in the Dark, which includes a recording of birds, singing at night time, that I captured in a forest back home by Leipzig, Germany, as well as Loon calls from the Yellowstone National park, a haunting sound. I think both sounds add to the atmosphere of the song and setting the scene for the story.
“Ghosts in the Dark started out as a typical heartache song, a relationship between 2 lovers gone wrong, but when I began writing it I couldn’t help but explore further, why it is that relationships, either love or friendships seem to be more difficult than ever to find or keep, that people are so precious about protecting their individuality, searching for attention online, but finding it difficult to open up in person.
“Did we lose connection with our roots or communities that can support and protect us? Often for me this place is in nature, where I can reconnect if I’m feeling lost, which we used as the main message within the visuals for the music video to Ghosts in the Dark. I worked with the talented people from the London Filmmakers Vivianna and Riccardo on this, with special thanks to Emma Pallett, Liam Wearne-Fisher and Ye-seul Kim, as well as my rescue dog Mir, who was the inspiration for Broken Forest’s logo and appears in a lot of my work. In this story, she helps the main character to find her way out of the isolation, that the city can sometimes make you feel like. We are all looking for that special connection with someone or something, but don’t seem to be able to reach it, even in a place filled with people. Maybe if we were to look up ones in a while and truly listen?”
We highly recommend you try and see Luise live, the following shows have been confirmed:
