Throughout 2019 Amy Duncan will be releasing a series of music videos in collaboration with animator Tracy Foster. Amy’s abstract photography has inspired the songs which combine intricate acoustic guitar loops and electronics, creating a dreamy folk-pop sound. Featuring percussion by Guy Nicolson (Moishes Bagel).
Tracy Foster is using the photographs that have influenced the songs as a starting point for the animations, using altered perception, layering and mystery as a visual theme
linking the videos.
The songs, which will later be released as an album, are engineered and mixed by Cameron Malcolm who produced the highly regarded Mid Air by Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile. Cameron is the son of Calum Malcolm who produced Amy’s previous albums: Cycles of Life (2013 Linn Records) & Undercurrents (2016) both of which were funded by Creative Scotland and distributed through Proper Music.
The main photograph above inspired the song Labyrinth. The image is of a shop window with buildings reflected, and she tells us that she found a lot of symbolism which you can hear in the lyrics to the song.
“I find reflections fascinating as they can appear like doorways into other worlds. I enjoy sharing my reflection photography as sometimes the dreamy otherworldly imagery is a good description of how I am feeling. I have found photography to be a really important outlet for the feelings that can’t be put into words and it offers a different way of approaching my songwriting. It gives me new ways of understanding myself and takes me down unusual thought pathways.”
The accompanying animation certainly captures that magic.
To help fund the animations, Amy has launched a Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/amyduncan
Patrons have access to exclusive updates and will be first to see the videos before the wider release. Other rewards include a handwritten lyric booklet and art prints of the photographs. Patrons also have the option to have a song written for them as well as having their name in the thank you credits.
