Multi-award-winning Orcadian Folk Songwriter Kris Drever (Lau) returns with a brand new single “Scapa Flow 1919”, our Song of the Day and his first solo release since ‘If Wishes Were Horses’ won the award for Best Song BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017.
Scapa Flow 1919 was initially commissioned for the BBC Radio Ballad series ‘The Ballads Of The Great War’.
Kris says..
‘The BBC wanted a song about the scuttling of the German High Fleet in Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands after the war ended. At the time it was a huge event and covered by all of the worlds media but has since faded into relative obscurity. It’d be the equivalent now of a Chinese Admiral ordering the sinking of the whole Chinese Navy off the coast of the Isle of Man.
“This year the 21st of June will be the centenary of ‘The Grand Scuttle’. I thought it’d be appropriate to release the song as a single one hundred years to the day after the initial event. Knowing our history is a good way of understanding the world and so, here it is.”
