This week’s Folk Show is an eclectic mix which gets off to flying start thanks to C Joynes & The Furlong Bray with Triennale, “an entrancing piece that defines Joynes’ style of playing”, taken from The Borametz Tree which we recently reviewed here. Joynes pops up again later, joined by the exquisite vocals of Stephanie Hladowski from that great 2012 album The Wild Wild Berry.
There is another double helping in the mix from Silly Wizard, taken from their eponymous debut album which has been re-issued by Talking Elephant this month; you can read our album review here. They were an incredibly influential band and are still making those connections with young musicians today, one example being The Trials of Cato who we’ve included for good measure.
Our Artists of the Month, The Askew Sisters also make a welcome appearance alongside Lisa O’Neill singing ‘As I Roved Out” from the new Topic Records compilation and Featured Album of the Month Vision & Revision: The First 80 Years Of Topic Records. Another Featured Album of the Month is Alex Seel‘s Spell on a Tin Drum from which we’ve included a brilliant instrumental piece – Quietus. The track certainly caught the ear of Glenn Kimpton, himself a finger-style guitarist who in his review said “Here I can really hear the influence of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn and the comparisons are justified.”
Other new releases include Neal Heppleston performing Bonny Ship the Diamond, a version like no other… taken from his album Folk Songs for Double Bass which you can buy here; Burnt Paw with Arthur’s Seat from his new album Lunar Vortex Incantations and Alex Rex with Smoke & Memory from his new album Otterburn.
Needless to say, there are some personal favourites dotted throughout. Enjoy.

The image I took one foggy morning at our local nature reserve with my old Olympus Pen EE-3 which is a great little half-frame camera.
