With its origins in the Workers’ Music Association, through the mid-20th-century folk revival to the present day, Topic Records has established itself as not only the pre-eminent British folk music label but one widely respected throughout the world. Remarkably, 2019 heralds this, the oldest independent label in the world’s, 80th anniversary.
We recently reviewed Anne Briggs, Anne’s eponymous 1971 album which has been reissued by Topic as part of the Anniversary celebrations. Each reissue features extra sleeve notes, new photographs and original artwork – in this instance, this included the original notes by A.L.Loyd, extensive notes by Ken Hunt as well as an introduction by Anne.
In his review of the album, Richard Hollingham concluded:
All-in-all, this is one of the most significant recordings of the period. A tribute to the recording techniques of Sean Davies and the production of AL Lloyd, a tribute to the work of Topic Records and a tribute to Anne Briggs. This is an important album documenting an important time in the cycle of traditional music. Nearly fifty years on, Anne is still being discovered, listened to and learned from. This is music to pass on to the next generations. Read the full review here.
To celebrate the release we gave away a rare test pressing of the eponymous classic which was signed by Anne.
And the winner is….
Andrew Cupples.
Congratulations!
For those that missed out (there were a lot of entries) don’t forget that the limited edition 180gm gold vinyl version is out now.
