Last year we had the pleasure of premiering ‘The Unconscious Echo’, the latest album from Cinder Well. I can’t think of any other album that could be described as “moments ranging from Swan Arcade style unaccompanied harmony vocals, to swelling instrumental choruses reminiscent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor”. That said, if you enjoy the likes of Lankum, Lisa O’Neill, Stick in the Wheel, Richard Dawson and some of the more alternative offerings we enjoy here on Folk Radio then you should really check them out.
Cinder Well is the brainchild of singer and multi-instrumentalist Amelia Baker (also a member of folk-punk acts Blackbird Raum and Gembrokers) whose songwriting is nostalgic and moving, centred around memory, loss, place, and longing. While heavily influenced by traditional American and Irish music and song, Cinder Well is deeply personal and original. Amelia Baker’s mourning vocals are framed with a resonator guitar, shruti box, and strings, and her lyrics and cathartic melodies wrap listeners in a surrealist world just adjacent to our own.
For those of you that have been looking forward to seeing Cinder Well live, now’s your chance as they will tour England and Scotland from June 6th-22nd. Amelia Baker will be joined on the tour by Marit Schmidt of Vradiazei and Sangre de Muerdago.
This is going to be a great tour with support on a few dates from Folk Radio favourites Jim Ghedi and Gwenifer Raymond, see details below. Here they are performing Through the Tendons at SoHo in Santa Barbara, it was filmed during their tour last year.
