When Paul Woodgate reviewed ‘How to Make it in Hollywood‘, the 2014 release from Curtis Eller and his band of misfits ‘The American Circus’, he opened by promising our readers that “you won’t have heard anything like this before” and concluded “In just under 40 minutes Eller and the Circus take your business class ticket to Glastonbury, rip it up, and replace it with steerage seats to voodoo-nights in New Orleans’ French Quarter. It’s a trip you should take.”
Fast forward to 2019 and there’s no let-up in their spontaneous-energy as Eller announces another album of vaudeville blues for which we have a new ‘murder barn session’ to share…
Following a tracking session for their forthcoming album “A Poison Melody”, Curtis Eller and the members of The American Circus gathered in a beautifully dilapidated barn in rural North Carolina (The Prospect Hill Murder Barn) and filmed a series of live performance videos. The band blasted through five numbers, including three songs from the new album, one from the vault, and a cover of a Pete Seeger classic. “No Soap Radio” is a rock & roll rave-up about Mexican border blaster radio stations and the 1963 Kennedy assassination.
Directed and filmed by Alex Maness and Recorded and mixed by Joseph Dejarnette.
