For New Year’s Day, we have a great Song of the Day from Yorkshire’s Serious Sam Barrett. ‘Holmfirth Anthem’ was learned from a recording by The Watersons and features on his new album Where the White Roses Grow, due for release on February 1st via Ya Dig? Records. He shared the following about the song.
“It’s hard to put into words how much I love this song. It’s wrapped in sentimental language and romantic imagery but it’s got Yorkshire grit running through it too. For me the tune has a natural flow to it that is hypnotic and draws the listener in like no other song I know. I’ve sung it from Barnsley to Berlin and it always gets the same reaction. Even a lot of people that aren’t into folk music in Yorkshire seem to know this song. Love, war, beauty and sheep, in just three verses.”
