It is 2019 and the growth of the far right around the world is sowing the seeds of hatred, fear and racism. We are told to shut borders and hate immigrants. Hate our neighbours and fear ourselves. We are told to buy austerity, while corporations and the super-rich line their pockets with the profits of our labour. We are told lie upon lie…
As we approach the future ‘This Is England’ is an anthem for a divided country; where consumerism and inequality go hand in hand; where streaming makes music free, and X-Factor keeps us numb; where hipster coffee meets junk food high streets; where we are chained to our cell phones and led by Facebook algorithms…
English identity is complex, but we are made simple, commodified by our rulers…
We are told to value freedom while everywhere we are in chains…
We are a land of immigrants, but we are told to hate immigrants. We share a history of collective struggle and endeavour. And yet we are told to worship the individual. We live in a madness of lies and misinformation, a place where market values monetise our every emotion, where fear negates hope…
‘This Is England’ is where the usual lines of right and wrong are caught in a crossfire of hashtags and online brainwashing. Virtual reality only offers a virtual identity. We are only allowed to choose from a very limited range of products. And they all taste the same…
Freedom in this context is simply the freedom to decorate our prison cell.
