As announced yesterday, Ian Carter and Nicola Kearey of Stick In The Wheel have taken up their recording equipment and ventured to new places within England, both physically and metaphorically for From Here: English Folk Field Recordings Volume 2.
They ask folk and traditional musicians what ‘From Here’ meant to them: this impulse to make music – From Here – where does it come from? Included amongst that list is English folk singer and musician Nancy Kerr.
Here’s the opening track from the second volume of English Folk Field Recordings. Nancy Kerr pairs Northumbrian tune Peacock Followed The Hen with one from Stokoe’s Songs of the North Country, Gan Tae The Kye.
Talking about the tunes, Nancy said “they seemed like sisters, so I kind of tied them together. I don’t remember not knowing Peacock Followed the Hen. And Gan Tae The Kye, often you hear the tune played but you don’t always hear it as a song.”
Nicola said “When Nancy laid this tune out, we were floored, such a great rhythm and ancient-sounding melodies, it hits you right where it should. All that personal history and lineage wrapped up in one tune. It was recorded in Nancy’s Sheffield front room in one take.”
