Earlier this month, Canadian singer Kaia Kater released her eagerly awaited new album ‘Grenades’ in the UK on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. What started out as a search to discover the roots of her identity became a physical and emotional exploration of history, in particular, her paternal ancestry, and has led to bold new heights of imagination and creative expression (read our album review here).
Taken from the album, we have the pleasure of sharing this new video for ‘Meridian Ground’, also our Song of the Day, which Kaia shared the following on:
“Meridian Ground is a song centred around family lore. I took a trip to my dad’s home country of Grenada last April. I reconnected with a lot of family, and heard stories from relatives about my uncle who used to swim out all the way to the cruise ships on the small Caribbean island as the tourists were disembarking. They’d be delighted and terrified at a little boy, an agile swimmer, bobbing up and down by the docks. I wanted to keep these stories breathing and to give them new life, so I decided to put most of them in this song.”
Playing alongside Kaia are Andrew Ryan on bass and Daniel Rougeau on guitar.
