Last month, I had the pleasure of sharing with you the video for ‘I’m Alive’, a track by Buffalo Blood, a US/UK music collective made up of Dean Owens, Neilson Hubbard, Joshua Britt and Audrey Spillman. Their self-titled album is due for release on 15 Feb 2019 via Eel Pie Records.
Their music made a big impression on me, drawing on a wide range of influences, including Scottish and American southern roots, Americana and folk, resulting in a recording which includes powerful songs and stories, chants and a whistling instrumental.
I was keen for you all to hear more so I included the stunning Ten Killer Ferry Lake on our latest show which is currently No 1 in two charts on Mixcloud. Following that, they asked if I’d like to share the accompanying video. To say I’ve been looking forward to sharing this is an understatement, Dean Owen shared the following:
Years ago, I was looking at a map and I saw this place called Killer Ferry Lake, and I just thought it was a fabulous title for a song. And then when we were writing the songs for Buffalo Blood I looked it up and that was actually where a lot of the Cherokees were forcibly moved to in Oklahoma, the end of the notorious Trail of Tears, so it really fitted. A lot of the songs occurred that way and we all thought that there was a sort of spiritual feel emerging as we followed the trail of tears when we headed to New Mexico and we saw road signs with the names of places we had read about all leading us to the recording sites.
Produced by Neilson Hubbard, the world premiere live performance of Buffalo Blood (including film footage from the location) and album launch is at Celtic Connections, Glasgow this Friday on 25 Jan 2019.
