Vagabond is the new song and video from singer-songwriter Steve Gunn, taken from his new album The Unseen In Between, out Jan 18th.
Named after a film by Agnes Varda film, ‘Vagabond’ paints a rich cast of characters whose lives have gone astray – like Mona who “camped out in a graveyard” and Jean-Pierre who “came from the road, his artwork remains unsold”. Accompanied by harmonies from Meg Baird, it’s an ode to the runaways, drifters, and vagabonds trying to make ends meet, and a meditation on our tempestuous times. It’s also our Song of the Day.
Taking its visual cues from Richard Avedon and David Bailey, the black & white and strobe-lit video (directed by Jason Evans and graphics by ICY Signs) has a timeless feel, with an intimacy that lends itself to Steve’s impeccable guitar work, with close-ups of his fingers casting spells on the frets.
For over a decade, Steve Gunn has been one of the folk-rock undergrounds’ most quietly pivotal figures. The Unseen In Between is his most immersive album to date – a harbour of soulful introspection amidst a storm, equally personal and that of the world at large, which continues his transition from underground hero and admired experimental practitioner who has worked with the likes of Michael Champman, Kurt Vile and Mike Cooper, to one of today’s most moving and profound singer-songwriters.
As part of his world tour which kicks off at the end of January in support of the album, Gunn will be playing UK shows in April in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. The full list of tour dates can be found below.
