Buffalo Blood is a US/UK music collective made up of Dean Owens, Neilson Hubbard, Joshua Britt and Audrey Spillman. Collectively they were inspired to decamp from their cosy studio spaces in Nashville TN and Leith (Scotland), following the Trail of Tears over 1300 miles to spend 2 weeks living and recording way out in the New Mexico desert at the stunning La Plaza Blanca, Echo Canyon, and around Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu (also the setting for much of the hit TV series Breaking Bad), to create the music – songs of displacement, immigration, refugees and the power of the human spirit – for Buffalo Blood.
The music draws on a wide range of influences, including Scottish and American southern roots, Americana and folk, resulting in a recording which includes powerful songs and stories, chants and a whistling instrumental. Watch their latest video for the dreamy Laurel Canyon tinged ‘I’m Alive’ which is also our Song of the Day. The song features on their upcoming self-titled album to be released on Eel Pie Records, 15 Feb 2019. Dean shared the following: ‘I’m Alive is the song that kicked off the whole idea of Buffalo Blood. A song inspired by the red rocks, canyons and spiritual pull of the American Southwest’
Produced by Neilson Hubbard, who also produced Mary Gauthier’s Rifles and Rosary Beads album – which has just been nominated for a Grammy (Folk Album of the Year). He’s also worked with the likes of Jason Isbell, John Prine, Gretchen Peters; and produced Dean’s last 2 albums (which got 4 and 5 star reviews across the board; the title track is currently nominated for UK Song of the Year at Americana Music Association [UK] awards). Collectively Neilson, Josh and Audrey are also part of The Orphan Brigade and Neighborhoods Apart Productions.
1st release from Eel Pie Records, 15 Feb 2019 (double album, red vinyl, gatefold sleeve (UK), digital (worldwide)
The world premiere live performance of Buffalo Blood (including film footage from the location) and album launch is at Celtic Connections, Glasgow – the UK’s premier roots music festival – on 25 Jan 2019.
