Fly is the second single by London-based folk duo Copper Viper and also our Song of the Day. The song draws on a range of influences, from harmony singing duos such as Simon & Garfunkel and The Milk Carton Kids to progressive bluegrass band Punch Brothers, and traces of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy swing style are clearly discernible in the distinctive chord sequences and mandolin lead breaks.
Lyrically, it combines a seemingly positive message with what is becoming a trademark hint of anxiety and regret, while maintaining a sufficient degree of enigma to allow the listener space to find their own interpretation. The duo of Robin Joel Sangster (vocals & acoustic guitar) and Duncan Menzies (vocals & mandolin) are joined on this track by Keith Lowe (double bass) and Taylor Carroll (washboard), providing a subtle yet driving rhythm section to underpin the soaring vocal harmonies and intricate instrumental passages.
“Fly” is taken from the forthcoming album “Cut It Down, Count The Rings”, which was recorded at Bear Creek Studio, WA, USA with producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile), and is scheduled for release in early 2019.
