This week’s show draws on music from both sides of the Atlantic highlighting how well folk music travels – especially when hearing ballads like Willie Moore, here performed by the Foghorn Stringband but also recently covered by John Smith on his Hummingbird album. There’s plenty of foot-tapping so feel free to dance in your kitchen or from wherever you may be listening to this from.
As usual, there are some new tunes including music from:
Mountain Man‘s long-awaited follow-up album Magic Ship;
Calum Wood‘s original score and composition She Wynds On which was commissioned by Visit Cairngorms to promote a new tourist route the heart of the National Park…Ross Ainslie and Charlie McKerron also feature on the album which is out on December 16th via Magic Park Records.
We Are More Than What We Leave Behind, the debut album from New York City-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dan Rauchwerk (founding member of the internationally touring folk band The Lords of Liechtenstein).
We have another great track from Serious Sam Barrett‘s new album ‘Where the White Roses Grow‘ (they are all great tracks by the way) which we reviewed here.
Plus Cunning Folk makes a return with A Constant Companion (out now on Dharma Records). He is our Artist of the Month and you can read the excellent review of the album here. Thomas Blake describes it is as “some of the finest acoustic music to come out of this country in years”.
There is a track from Stick in the Wheel’s new album This and The Memory of This on which they collaborate with a host of great performers including Jack Sharp here.
There’s some lovely fingerwork throughout many of these tunes especially from Steve Gunn & The Black Twig Pickers, prior to which the young and talented Gwenifer Raymond puts her banjo through its paces on Idumea.
There’s also a number of older recordings, some of which are field recordings which add to the whole magic of what makes folk and roots music so appealing.
