Brother Green is the debut EP from Leeds-based old time acoustic trio Redwood River Band. The band consists of Simon Robinson (Vocals, Banjo, Guitar), Naomi Moores (Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica, Clarinet) and Alice Phelps (Vocals, Double Bass).
The EP opens to the title track Brother Green an anti-war song which also goes by the name of The Dying Soldier which was most famously performed by American country and folk singer Buell Kazee and more recently covered by the likes Pharis and Jason Romero.
They follow this with Green Rocky Road which was made popular by the Mayor of MacDougal Street himself – Dave Van Ronk. The three-part harmonies are pristine and sublime throughout as they weave across the ages taking in the blues (St James Infirmary Blues) to the light-hearted swing of Big Bill Broonzy’s Glory of Love. The EP calls to mind that whole Gaslight Cafe Coffee House era.
