I only came across Bristol-based band Solana for the first time last year after hearing their vibrant and colourful album Camino and what a delight that discovery was. It is on their home turf of Bristol that their beautiful new video for two of their latest compositions ‘Mirage / The Salad Smuggler’s Sister’ was filmed which we have the pleasure of premiering and which is also our Tune of the day. Flautist and accordionist Tamsin shared the following:
“This video, filmed on a beautiful wide-beam houseboat in Bristol, features a set of two of our latest compositions. Mirage was written by my brother Rowen (fiddle) and gives us a chance to play around with drone accompaniment and free-time phrasing. The second tune I wrote in the bath: the whistle is one of the few instruments that doesn’t mind getting wet! It’s a ripping tune and rhythmically complex, and I could barely play it to start with. The name is a nod to the Shooglenifty album “The Arm’s Dealers Daughter” which was always playing in our kitchen when we were kids. I am the sister in question; the rather delicious salad was smuggled from a wedding last summer by Rowen. None of the guests wanted to eat it anyway.”
The audio was recorded live on location and mixed and mastered by Tom Excell.
The band:
Rowen Elliott – fiddle
Tamsin Elliott – accordion, whistle
Elio Arauz de Marcos – drum kit
JP Wolfgang – Spanish guitar
Henry Edmonds – double bass
