Renowned for his work as the leader of acclaimed Scottish band Broken Records (4AD), Jamie Sutherland has broken out on his own to produce his first solo debut Bruise to be released in 2019.
Taken from the record, new single and video ‘When We’re Alone’ captures the ennui of a breakup and the sense of disillusionment that follows. In his own words Jamie tell us it’s “a song about realisation, that a time and relationship is over, the places you go to acknowledge that, and the loneliness of starting again.”
Sparse folk stylings and delicate piano melodies are contrasted with Jamie’s powerful, vulnerable vocal. Opening line ‘there’s a mirror, pointed straight at me’ sums up the introspective feel of the track succinctly.
The song was recorded at the Happiness Hotel, Edinburgh by Neil Pennycook and features a band made up of members of Broken Records, Meursault, Withered Hand, Eagleowl, Stanley Odd & Siobhan Wilson.
Jamie has toured with the likes of The National, Black Keys, Editors, Plan B and Frightened Rabbit. When he’s not playing music himself he runs the Nothing Ever Happens Here night in Edinburgh. Named after a reference to a 1980s American Hardcore documentary in which it’s scrawled on a toilet door, the night is a key part of Edinburgh’s music scene.
